{"id":18895,"date":"2026-08-25T15:58:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T13:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marsilioarte.it\/luoghi-dell-arte\/sonnabend-collection-mantova\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T17:39:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T15:39:48","slug":"sonnabend-collection-mantova","status":"publish","type":"luoghi-dell-arte","link":"https:\/\/www.marsilioarte.it\/en\/luoghi-dell-arte\/sonnabend-collection-mantova\/","title":{"rendered":"Sonnabend Collection Mantova"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"456\">Within the fully restored rooms of a medieval palace, a new museum has been created to house one of the world\u2019s most remarkable <strong data-start=\"128\" data-end=\"163\">collections of contemporary art<\/strong>. <strong data-start=\"165\" data-end=\"200\">Palazzo della Ragione in Mantua<\/strong> is now home to the <strong data-start=\"220\" data-end=\"252\">Sonnabend Collection Mantova<\/strong>, telling the story of a century through the eyes of <strong data-start=\"305\" data-end=\"325\">Ileana Sonnabend<\/strong>, the gallerist and collector who forged a bridge between America and Europe, permanently reshaping the geography of the art world.<\/p><br \/>\r\n<p data-start=\"458\" data-end=\"1143\">With the opening of the Sonnabend Collection Mantova, the Renaissance city welcomes an <strong data-start=\"545\" data-end=\"569\">international museum<\/strong> that brings together the <strong data-start=\"595\" data-end=\"648\">story of a woman who revolutionised the art world<\/strong> and that of <strong data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"672\">a place<\/strong> which, from the fifteenth century to the present day, has remained a <strong data-start=\"742\" data-end=\"778\">vital centre of European culture<\/strong>. The project is the result of a collaboration between the <strong data-start=\"837\" data-end=\"863\">Municipality of Mantua<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"869\" data-end=\"904\">Sonnabend Collection Foundation<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"910\" data-end=\"927\">Marsilio Arte<\/strong>, with the aim of making <strong data-start=\"952\" data-end=\"1026\">one of the most important private collections of the twentieth century<\/strong> accessible to the public, offering an extraordinary overview of international art from the 1950s to the early 2000s.<\/p><br \/>\r\n<p data-start=\"1145\" data-end=\"1901\">Built over a lifetime by Ileana Sonnabend (1914\u20132007), together with her husband Michael Sonnabend (1900\u20132001) and their adopted son Antonio Homem, the collection bears witness to the <strong data-start=\"1329\" data-end=\"1375\">experimentation that shaped visual culture<\/strong> from the mid-twentieth century onwards, outlining a true <strong data-start=\"1433\" data-end=\"1467\">map of contemporary creativity<\/strong>. Through the <strong data-start=\"1481\" data-end=\"1526\">Sonnabend galleries in Paris and New York<\/strong>, Ileana anticipated and promoted the artistic movements that would redefine the collective imagination: from the experimental language of Neo-Dada to the iconic power of Pop Art, from the rigorous structures of Minimalism to the poetic explorations of Conceptual Art, as well as the visionary languages of Italian Arte Povera and the development of contemporary photography.<\/p><br \/>\r\n<p data-start=\"1903\" data-end=\"2514\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Alongside the permanent collection, the museum presents a programme of <strong data-start=\"1974\" data-end=\"1999\">temporary exhibitions<\/strong> devoted to some of the most significant artists and movements represented in the collection. The opening of the Sonnabend Collection Mantova was accompanied by a presentation of <strong data-start=\"2178\" data-end=\"2208\">Andy Warhol\u2019s Screen Tests<\/strong>, the celebrated filmed portraits that capture the atmosphere of New York\u2019s cultural scene in the 1960s.
