\r\nLe Stanze della Fotografia in Venice, in collaboration with Marsilio Arte<\/a> and the Giorgio Cini Foundation<\/a>, presents the exhibition “Robert Mapplethorpe in Venice: The Forms of the Classic,” dedicated to one of the most renowned and controversial photographers of the 20th century. Curated by Denis Curti<\/a>, Artistic Director of Le Stanze della Fotografia, and organized in partnership with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation<\/a> in New York, this extraordinary exhibition will be open to the public in Venice from April 10, 2025, to January 6, 2026.

\r\n“Robert Mapplethorpe in Venice” offers an immersive journey through over 200 works, many of which are being shown in Italy for the first time. The project explores the influence of classicism in Mapplethorpe’s photography, celebrating the beauty of the human body, the perfection of forms, and the evocative power of light. This event marks Mapplethorpe’s return to Venice after more than thirty years since his last major retrospective in 1992, providing a unique opportunity to rediscover the artist on the picturesque San Giorgio Maggiore Island.

\r\n“The Forms of the Classic” is the first installment of a trilogy dedicated to the artist, which will continue in 2026 with “The Forms of Desire” in Milan and “The Forms of Beauty” in Rome. The Venice exhibition focuses on the relationship between Mapplethorpe’s photography and ancient sculpture, emphasizing the timelessness of his subjects and the fluidity of his compositions. The portrayed bodies, captured in their sculptural perfection, emerge as timeless icons, while his floral still lifes reveal a poetic and refined aesthetic.

\r\nThe exhibition also includes Mapplethorpe’s early artistic experiments, such as collages and ready-made works from the 1960s, showcasing his early inclination for experimentation and innovative visual language.
