The catalogue presents the site-specific installation There Are Other Fish In The Sea, created by the Danish collective SUPERFLEX for the courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. Eight pink travertine columns—conceived as structures that could potentially be inhabited by other forms of life, functioning as new interspecies habitats—emerge from a reflective pool of water that mirrors the surrounding environment, creating a suspended dimension that is at once terrestrial and aquatic.
In keeping with the collective’s artistic practice, internationally recognized for combining aesthetic research with socio-political reflection, the work opens a critical discussion on climate change and the need to rethink the way we inhabit the planet by moving beyond an anthropocentric perspective.
The philosophy underpinning SUPERFLEX’s work, together with the collective’s creative process, is explored in a conversation between Arturo Galansino and Bjørnstjerne Christiansen. Contributions by scholars Simone Pollo and Alex Jordan examine humanity’s impact on the planet and the various dimensions of interspecies design: from the interaction of other life forms with architectures foreign to their natural environments, to the imbalance between the biomass of living beings and the mass of human-made artifacts that characterize our ecosystem—what might be described as “the dark side of the extraordinary capabilities of Homo sapiens.”
The catalogue thus outlines the search for a new balance within a shared landscape, where the boundaries between the built environment and natural ecosystems are becoming increasingly blurred and interconnected.
