Controfacciata: the poetic photography of Matthias Schaller on display in Venice

From April 5 to November 23, 2025, Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice will host “Controfacciata,“ a profound and evocative photographic exhibition by acclaimed German artist Matthias Schaller. Curated by Mario Codognato and promoted by Berggruen Arts & Culture, the show forms part of Venice’s vibrant cultural calendar and presents a rich visual exploration of the city’s architectural heritage. Schaller, renowned for his distinctive blend of analytical precision and poetic vision, exhibits 28 photographs from his “Controfacciata“ series, many created specifically for this occasion.

A vision suspended between past and renewal

Initiated in Venice in 2004, the “Controfacciata“ project centers on a unique architectural feature: the central spaces of the piano nobile in Venetian palazzos. Often neglected or overlooked, these interiors become silent witnesses to the city’s transformations. Schaller captures them in dim light, pierced by brilliant rays that bleach furnishings and walls, evoking a powerful symbolism. Rather than portraying Venice as a city in decay, the artist frames it as a place in flux—in a “winter“ phase of its life cycle—poised for future regeneration.

Photography between documentation and metaphysics

Schaller’s visual language is defined by his masterful use of analog photography, later digitized and reworked to highlight desaturated tones and ethereal atmospheres. His images transcend simple architectural documentation, evolving into poetic compositions that imbue space with emotional and conceptual weight. The interplay of natural light, lagoon reflections, and rigorously composed frames transforms these interiors into contemplative, mysterious environments.

Venice as an indirect portrait

Schaller sees his work as an “indirect portrait“ of Venice. By focusing on the interiors of its historic buildings, he traces the city’s cultural identity, blending its rich history with a contemporary lens. His work resonates with the tradition of photographers such as Carlo Naya and Carlo Ponti, while also echoing the sensibilities of contemporary artists like Hiroshi Sugimoto. The result is an intimate, multilayered visual narrative that encourages viewers to reflect on memory, time, and the essence of place.

A Marsilio Arte editorial project

To accompany the exhibition, Marsilio Arte is publishing a distinguished catalogue featuring more than 60 images from the “Controfacciata“ series. The publication includes an in-depth conversation between Matthias Schaller and curator Mario Codognato, offering valuable insights into the artist’s creative process and conceptual framework. This volume serves as a key companion to the exhibition, enriching and extending the viewer’s experience.

Opening hours and visitor information

The exhibition is open to the public free of charge on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, providing broad access to one of the most significant contemporary photographic projects. On weekdays, visits are available by appointment, offering a quieter, more personalized encounter with the works.
