The bond between Venice and Joseph Kosuth, who lived and worked in the city and participated in the Art Biennale eight times, representing the Hungarian Pavilion in 1993, is growing stronger. This time, the pioneer of conceptual art arrives at the Casa dei Tre Oci on the island of Giudecca, the Venetian headquarters of the Berggruen Institute Europa, with the exhibition The-exchange-value-of-languagehas-fallen-to-zero, curated by Mario Codognato and Adriana Rispoli from Berggruen Arts & Culture.
From 28 March to 22 November 2026, A Chain of Resemblance, Kosuth’s new large-scale project inspired by a text by Michel Foucault, will welcome visitors to the Casa dei Tre Oci, starting a journey that unfolds along the first floor of the building, bringing together a series of historical works that testify to the artist’s interest in the dynamics of language, understood both as subject and content. One example is One and Three Mirrors, a work from 1965 that embodies the artist’s investigation into the construction of meaning, deriving from the relationship between image, object and text.
Works such as The Fifth Investigation (1969), Text/Context (1978–1979) and Where Are You Standing? (1976), displayed in adjacent rooms, evoke Kosuth’s rethinking of the idea of audience, community and collaboration in the wake of a different approach to authorship. In particular, Where Are You Standing?, the poster originally created by the artist for the 1976 Venice Biennale as part of the International Local collective (composed of Sarah Charlesworth, Anthony McCall and Kosuth himself), will be re-presented for the exhibition. The 1970 poster The Seventh Investigation, on the other hand, will be produced and installed in a public space in Venice during the course of the exhibition.
Kosuth thus returns to questioning the value and functioning of language and meaning, adding another piece to his fifty-year-long research.
