The 20th Anniversary of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women, one of the most important awards dedicated to supporting women artists.
“With Time for Women! Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and Collezione Maramotti reaffirm the value of a Prize that, for twenty years, has provided space and visibility to new voices, making a significant contribution to the international contemporary art scene.” — Arturo Galansino
Established through a collaboration between Max Mara, Whitechapel Gallery, and Collezione Maramotti, the Max Mara Art Prize for Women is a biennial award aimed at artists who identify as women. Winners are granted a six-month residency in Italy to conduct research and develop a new project, which is then exhibited at both the Whitechapel Gallery in London and the Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia.
The catalogue accompanies the 20th-anniversary exhibition held in the Strozzina spaces of Palazzo Strozzi, paying tribute to two decades of artistic innovation and female creativity. For the first time, it presents all the projects by the nine winning artists, conceived during their residency in Italy—a central aspect of the Prize. Painting, video, sculpture, and installation alternate in a journey of reflection on themes such as identity, memory, the body, society, and politics.
The volume celebrating this anniversary gathers the works of the nine prize winners from 2005 to the present: Margaret Salmon (1958, Australia), Hannah Rickards (1978, United Kingdom), Andrea Büttner (1972, Germany), Laure Prouvost (1978, France), Corin Sworn (1971, United Kingdom), Emma Hart (1982, United Kingdom), Helen Cammock (1977, United Kingdom), Emma Talbot (1983, United Kingdom), Dominique White (1993, United Kingdom). Each artist has contributed a new work created especially for this publication.
Alongside institutional texts by Giuseppe Morbidelli, President of Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, and Arturo Galansino, Director General, the catalogue includes critical essays by Mariuccia Casadio and Bina Von Stauffenberg. The latter offers an overview of the nine winners and their artistic practices, reaffirming the Max Mara Art Prize for Women as a pioneering example of female-driven cultural patronage—a platform that unites forces to launch and support women in the art world.
