From 10 October 2024 to 2 February 2025 Palazzo Reale in Milan presents Ugo Mulas. The process of photography, one of the most extensive and detailed retrospective dedicated to one of his most important authors, born in 1928 and died in 1973. Promoted by the City of Milan-Cultura and produced by Palazzo Reale and Marsilio Arte in collaboration with the Ugo Mulas Archive, with the support of the Deloitte Foundation and Deloitte Italy, the exhibition curated by Denis Curti, director of Le Stanze della Fotografia in Venice, and Alberto Salvadori, director of the Ugo Mulas Archive, proposes an unprecedented cut that finds its main narrative nucleus in the city of Milan, taken in its many facets.
More than 250 images, many of which have never been exhibited before, precious vintage shots, documents, books and films, cover the entire production of Ugo Mulas: from theatre to fashion, from portraits of international artists, protagonists of American Pop art, to intellectuals, architects and figures in the world of culture and entertainment – such as Dino Buzzati, Giorgio De Chirico, Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Arthur Miller, Eugenio Montale, Louise Nevelson, Gio Ponti, Salvatore Quasimodo, Giorgio Strehler, Andy Warhol and many others – from the city to nudity and jewelry. Along the path articulated by thematic chapters emerges the profile of a “total” photographer, who has addressed different themes and subjects during his brief and intense experience, with the awareness that photography is not mere documentation, but testimony and critical interpretation of reality.
From December 9 to 24, 2024, Palazzo Reale is offering a special initiative for the Christmas time, providing a discounted ticket for the four ongoing exhibitions: “MUNCH The Inner Scream”, “Picasso the Foreigner”, “Ugo Mulas. The Process of photography”, “BAJ. Baj chez Baj”

UGO MULAS IN CITTÀ
Alongside the major retrospective at Palazzo Reale, Ugo Mulas. The process of photography, Marsilio Arte and the Municipality of Milan-Culture are launching a multi-venue project called Ugo Mulas in città, which aims to retrace and celebrate the key locations significant for the photographer’s artistic research and highlighting his close relationship with the city of Milan.
From October 10, 2024, Pinacoteca di Brera, Palazzo Citterio, Museo del Novecento, Palazzo Morando | Costume Moda Immagine, Museo Poldi Pezzoli and Fondazione Marconi will be presenting a selection of works by Ugo Mulas intimately connected to their site and histories. For instance, Joan Miró’s portrait, a shot taken in 1963 in a room at the Poldi Pezzoli, next to the famous Portrait of a Young Woman by Pollaiolo, along with portraits of artists whose works are now housed in the Museo del Novecento; photographs of the city and its neighbourhoods, and reflecting the deep friendship between Ugo Mulas and Giorgio Marconi.
Led by this synergy, it will be possible to dive into a wide-ranging narrative that indissolubly intertwines Mulas’s biographical and artistic journey with the historical and cultural context of Milan, inviting visitors to continue their exploration beyond the exhibition.
The itinerary, developed as an intellectual journey, opens on October 10 at Pinacoteca di Brera, Palazzo Morando | Costume Moda Immagine, Museo Poldi Pezzoli, and Fondazione Marconi; and at Museo del Novecento on October 11. In December, Palazzo Citterio will also join the project for its new opening.
