For her first solo show at an Italian art institution, Dineo Seshee Bopape, a South African artist born in 1981, builds a dialogue with the Pirelli HangarBicocca space through highly symbolic elements that summon up narratives and myths from a range of geographic contexts.
This exhibition, “Born in the firstlight of the morning [moswara’marapo],” presents a new selection of works, many of them featuring materials such as soil, herbs, clay, and charcoal. Molding and combining these substances into large-scale sculptures and installations, the artist evokes both personal experiences and events etched in collective memory.
The exhibition at Pirelli HangarBicocca prompts reflection on the causes and effects of encounters between the cultures of different continents; it presents peculiar geographies that reveal the complexity of the world we live in, which Bopape highlights—literally and metaphorically—through video, audio, and sculpture. With this exhibition and publication,
Pirelli underscores its commitment to supporting unique, experimental languages of art. Themes such as ecology, tradition, and the role of history are central to the philosophy that guides the company as it works to pass on these values to future generations.
