«It seemed and still seems essential to me that an “investigation” of this type also presents itself as a choral tale, which as effectively as possible conveys the complexity of what for convenience we will call “foreign perception of contemporary Italian art”, the challenges it poses and the potential it allows to be glimpsed.» Christian Caliandro
A book that represents a sort of collective portrait, a choppy and blurry photograph of the Italian artistic system today – and of the image it projects outside.
With Us in the world. An investigation into the foreign perception of contemporary Italian art, Christian Caliandro conducts an in-depth and timely investigation into the international projection of Italian art. Through an approach that combines sociological analysis and aesthetic criticism, the volume explores how our artistic system is perceived beyond national borders, in a historical moment dominated by the proliferation of images and technological innovation.
The essay, divided into two sections, is divided into twelve chapters and is enriched by the contributions of forty-two experts who were asked simple questions that opened a dialogue of insights, connections, and deviations: how do you view the current perception of contemporary Italian art abroad, from your professional perspective and based on your experience? What tools and strategies, to be implemented or introduced from scratch, do you think are useful for making this perception more effective?
Us in the world. An investigation into the foreign perception of contemporary Italian art offers a fundamental map for scholars, curators, and enthusiasts who wish to decode the “rules of art” in the new millennium. Caliandro’s research aims to be a critical tool for navigating contemporary manifestations and rediscovering the value of the Italian worldview.
The volume, published by Marsilio Arte, is co-promoted by the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture and La Quadriennale Foundation of Rome.
