Almaviva, or The Useless Precaution was the original tide of Gioachino Rossini's The Barber of Seville when it was first performed on February 20th 1816 at the Teatro Argentina in Rome. Born in Pesaro, Rossini wrote the opera in a great rush (in about twenty days), based on the libretto by the young poet Cesare Sterbini and adapted the Barber by Beaumarchais that had already been made into a libretto by Petrosellini for Paisiello in 1782 (a true masterpiece that even left its mark on Mozart). By competing with one of the most reknown maestros of Neapolitan tradition, Rossini wagered the well-known fiasco of the première. However, success was not slow in coming and it took no less than the second performance in Rome for it to affirm itself as one of the most famous operas.
