For over thirty years, on the island of Murano, Berengo Studio has served as a benchmark for contemporary art and glassmaking experimentation.

Published by Marsilio Arte and curated by the artistic duo Penzo+Fiore—Andrea Penzo and Cristina Fiore—this volume traces the history of Berengo Studio, highlighting its pioneering role in bringing Murano tradition into dialogue with contemporary languages. This ongoing process has been carried out in constant relationship with the Venice Biennale and, since 2009, with the creation of the collateral event Glasstress, which stands today as a milestone in the crafting and exhibition of artists’ glass.

In this context, Berengo Studio has established itself as a privileged space for encounter and collaboration between master glassmakers and artists from diverse fields of research. Founded in Murano in 1989 by Adriano Berengo, the Studio has collaborated over the years with leading figures on the international art scene—including Ai Weiwei, Tracey Emin, and Thomas Schütte—who recognized glass as an expressive medium capable of transcending purely decorative dimensions, expanding expressive potential, and redefining the relationship between artisanal craft and contemporary artistic inquiry.

Reflecting on the works and key figures who have made a significant contribution to the project, the publication documents the role of glass as a foundational material, capable of questioning the value of manual artistic production in the digital age. Readers are guided through the narrative by a rich selection of images, including behind-the-scenes photographs of the working processes usually hidden from the public, which form an integral part of the furnace’s production system.
