The dramma giocoso of Don Giovanni is the second masterpiece in the trilogy of works wuìith librettos by Lorenzo Da Ponte (the other two are The Marriage of Figaro and Così fan tutte). Mozart premièred the opera in Prague on 29 October 1787. The Nostizt-Theater impresarios had commissioned him to compose a new work after the success of The Marriage of Figaro and specifically asked for an important part for the baritone Luigi Bassi, who had been greatly acclaimed in the role.
Mozart worked quickly from March to October and, legend has it, completed the overture only two days before the première. Don Giovanni was a great success, which renewed the enthusiasm of Mozart’s beloved Prague audience. Amng those who attended the première was Giacomo Casanova, a highly simbolic presence.
