A key figure in the contemporary cultural and collecting scene, Antonio Homem, president and co-founder of the Sonnabend Collection Foundation and adopted son of Ileana and Michael Sonnabend, made a fundamental contribution to the launch of the Sonnabend Collection Mantova, hosted in the restored rooms of the Palazzo della Ragione.
In collaboration with the Municipality of Mantua, the Sonnabend Collection Foundation and Marsilio Arte, Antonio Homem, together with Phokion Potamianos, treasurer of the US foundation, has given the public access to a selection of works from the collection of Ileana and Michael Sonnabend, including pieces by Jasper Johns, Anselm Kiefer, Jannis Kounellis, Jeff Koons, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mario Schifano and Andy Warhol.
Mattia Palazzi, Mayor of Mantua, recalls his commitment: “Antonio Homem, an honorary citizen of Mantua, believed deeply in the Sonnabend Collection Mantova project. His vision and generosity will remain an integral part of this space and of the bond we have built together. During his recent stay in the city, accompanied by his son Phokion, he reaffirmed a vibrant and sincere relationship with our community”.
The essential role played by Homem in the creation of the Sonnabend Collection Mantova is also evoked by the words of Luca De Michelis, CEO of Marsilio Arte: “With Antonio Homem, we shared a cultural project of great value and international significance. We will always remember his passion and dedication in making the extraordinary legacy of the Sonnabend Collection accessible to the public”.
Mario Codognato, director of the Sonnabend Collection Mantova, adds: “Antonio preserved and passed on the cultural legacy of Ileana and Michael Sonnabend with intelligence and sensitivity. His passing leaves a great void in the international art community”.
