One of the most important figures in international photography after World War II, Ugo Mulas (Pozzolengo, 1928 – Milan, 1973) soon understood, as self-taught, that being a photographer means providing a critical and conscious testimony of society.
The book offers a synthesis that offers an overall reading that opens to the different experiences faced by this extraordinary photographer, transversal to all the established genres and able to deepen different themes. From his debut in the suburbs at the Biennale d’Arte in Venice to the Jamaica bar of Brera in Milan. His first experiences with design, fashion and Mila Schön; the world of theatre with Giorgio Strehler and the Spoleto Festival; his friendship with Marcel Duchamp and Lucio Fontana; the immense report dedicated to the artists Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, to name a few. Portraits of Max Ernst, Giacometti, Mirò, Morandi, Pasolini, and many others. The world of culture and literature, its proximity to Eugenio Montale and his images for Ossi di seppia. But also his interest in fashion and advertising, the great trips to Italian cities and around the world (the United States, Russia, Denmark and, of course, Venice) up to his “Verifications” a series of thirteen photographic works through which Mulas wonders about photography itself. The different topics flow within a narrative that winds through 14 sections, which collect over 300 images, enriched by the text of Luca Massimo Barbero and the essays of the curators Denis Curti and Alberto Salvadori.
